Tongyi Qianwen is described as a language model similar to ChatGPT, trained on English and Chinese texts. It's claimed that Alibaba's AI model has been trained with ten times the parameters of ChatGPT4. Previously, Alibaba had released two open-source models based on the Tongyi Qianwen architecture, each with 7 billion parameters. Tongyi Qianwen was initially available to a limited user group during its beta testing phase.

In June, the Chinese government announced that all publicly disclosed artificial intelligence technologies must undergo scrutiny. The government's AI-related regulations came into effect on August 15th. Approval was granted to leading Chinese firms including Baidu, Tencent, TikTok, and ByteDance.
